At Avalon Ranch, we use group therapy to supplement individual treatment and foster a strong sense of community. Our groups are designed to support a number of goals, including self-expression, self-esteem, and relapse prevention:
SKILL DEVELOPMENT GROUPS (also known as "Life Skills")
Avalon Ranch uses the popular life skills approach to focus on living a life of sobriety one day at a time. Many addicts have not developed or have lost basic life skills. Group therapy allows participants to practice skills that must be utilized after treatment to maintain sobriety.
EDUCATIONAL GROUPS
Our group therapists use educational groups to teach participants about the mechanisms of addiction, triggers, relapse and other psycho-social mechanisms.
COGNITIVE BEHAVIOR GROUPS
Cognitive-behavioral therapy in a group setting allows participants to assist others and themselves in recognizing behavior choices which may have led to substance abuse in the past and relapse in the future. Group CBT also strengthens the individual cognitive behavior therapy offered at Avalon Ranch.
SUPPORT GROUPS
Avalon Ranch mandates a number of support groups for participants. Using peer pressure as a positive force for change, support groups allow participants to share their feelings and experiences with the group, as well as policing each other's actions. Support groups are a critical component in learning to navigate life after treatment.
PROCESS GROUPS
Process groups at Avalon Ranch are intended to allow participants to work through underlying issues that are an obstacle to sobriety. Using a variety of techniques including somatic experiencing and art therapy, past traumas, behaviors and beliefs are related, which teaches new ways to handle future trauma and other difficult situations.
